Novak Djokovic hoping for speedy tennis return after knee surgery

Novak Djokovic is aiming to return to tennis "as soon as possible" after having knee surgery.

The Serbian ace withdrew from the French Open after suffering the problem during his win over Francisco Cerundolo in Paris and is now a doubt for Wimbledon next month as he aims to recover quickly.

Djokovic wrote on X: "I’m still processing it all but I am happy to update you that the surgery went well.

"My love for this sport is strong and the desire to compete at the highest level is what keeps me going.

"I am so appreciative of the team of doctors who have been by my side as well as the overwhelming support I have received from my fans.

"I’m going to do my best to be healthy and fit to return to the court as soon as possible."

The injury will also impact Djokovic's preparations for the Olympics in Paris this summer and former Grand Slam winner Mats Wilander says that the outgoing world number one should focus on being ready for the Games rather than Wimbledon as he attempts to win a gold medal for the first time in his career.

He said: "We know Novak is keen to play for a couple more years. Hopefully, he can get back.

"Wimbledon is important, but the Olympics is way more important for Novak Djokovic. That’s what he has to get ready for."
