Rob Page can understand fans booing as Wales draw with Gibraltar

Rob Page can understand why Wales fans booed him after the embarrassing draw at Gibraltar.

The coach was jeered by supporters after the 0-0 friendly draw against the minnows on Thursday (06.06.24) but is determined to stay focused on the "bigger picture" despite the criticism.

In response to the fans, Page said: "They are entitled to their opinion, absolutely. I get it, I completely get it.

"I'm a Welsh supporter as well as the manager, I'm disappointed. But I have to keep saying about the bigger picture and I'll probably get criticised for that.

"It's the bigger picture and we're not going to lose focus on what we've done."

The dismal draw has raised questions about Page's suitability for the job but he is now turning his attention to his team's Nations League games in September.

He said: "If you've got a business plan and a long-term plan you can't be emotional.

"That's a question you should ask the board or the chief exec or the president, not myself. I'm not going to lose focus on the long-term plan we've got.

"It's a draw against a Gibraltar team that we're really disappointed with and our focus is on getting the team and squad ready for September to win Nations League games."

Page added that context should be taken into account as a number of players made their debuts in the team's first match since their heartbreaking failure to reach Euro 2024.

He said: "Of course, it’s Gibraltar. But I want to put a bit of context on it.

"We’ve just missed out on the Euros and this is our first game after that.

"The lads are on the back of three weeks off, so it was unrealistic to start with our strongest team for the two games."
