Iga Swiatek takes pride in French Open comparisons with Rafael Nadal

Iga Swiatek is "proud" to be compared to Rafael Nadal for her French Open record.

The world number one will attempt to become Roland Garros champion for the third year running when she takes on Jasmine Paolini in Saturday's (08.06.24) final but has played down parallels between herself and 14-time Paris champion Nadal.

Swiatek said: "We'll see in 14 years if the journey is similar.

"I mean, that's obviously really nice for me. I would never expect anybody to compare me to Rafa because for me he's above everybody, and he's a total legend.

"Yeah, as I said, we'll see in a couple of years, but I'm proud of myself that I'm playing consistently here and that I'm mentioned in the same sentence as Rafa. That's cool."

Swiatek defeated Coco Gauff in straight sets to book her place in the final and explained that keeping her game simple was they key to coming through in an "intense" contest.

The Polish ace said: "For sure it was intense. In the second set it was kind of tight because we were breaking each other, but I’m happy that I was consistent with my tactics – I didn’t overthink stuff and I just went for it at the end."

Meanwhile, Swiatek warned last month that the busy tennis calendar prevents the sport's top stars from performing at their very best.

She said: "Overall, the Tour is getting more and more demanding, because of the length of the tournaments and all these mandatory rules, both on ATP and WTA.

"Scheduling-wise, the planning is going to be more important, sometimes even [missing] some tournaments that are important for you, for you to be ready for the next one.

"Even if I win [a tournament], it doesn't stick in my head. I celebrate for one day, then I'm off to another tournament ... in my head."
