Sylvinho on challenging nature of managing a national side

Sylvinho has admitted coaching a national side is “challenging”.

The 50-year-old Albania manager doesn’t think his job is “easy” because he has to unite a group of players who are used to working with different people and adopting different styles of play, all in a short space of time.

He told FourFourTwo magazine: “There’s lots of positive stuff about working with a national team, but a few negative things too.

“We don’t have much time to prepare for games – we don’t get the players for a long period – so it’s very challenging.

“You welcome 23 players who may be from 23 different clubs with 23 different coaching methodologies.

“Then you have 10 days, or two games, to make sure they deliver their best. It’s not easy at all.

“That’s why following them at their clubs is a big part of our job – then we can fix this or that aspect of their games through short videos that we send to show exactly what we want from them.

“That’s something I learned while working with Brazil. The work we do on the pitch is key, but what we do off it is also important.”

Sylvinho’s current contract with Albania will end after Euro 2024, but he’s not in a “rush” to sort out his future.

He said: “I haven’t renewed [my contract] yet but I have a great relationship with the federation president, so there’s no rush.

“We’re focused on the Euros.”
