Steve Clarke pleased with Scotland response as they stay alive at Euro 2024

Steve Clarke was pleased that Scotland showed their true selves in the 1-1 draw against Switzerland.

The Scots kept their hopes of reaching the last 16 of Euro 2024 alive with a point in Wednesday's (19.06.24) fixture and Clarke was impressed with the way his team bounced back after the 5-1 drubbing by Germany in the tournament opener.

He said: "It was what we expected.

"This is the way we have been playing as a team for the last three or four years. It is why we are here at a major tournament.

"I thought it was a good team performance against a good opponent.

"It was a good reaction to a disappointing night and we are still alive in the tournament.

"Sometimes as a player or manager it doesn’t go your way and it certainly didn’t go our way on Friday night."

Clarke continued: "Tonight was about getting back to what we are good at, working hard, making sure we got the preparation right, and I think we did.

"They are going to feel a lot better going into the next game on the back of that kind of performance.

"We showed that as well as the aggression and fight and that dirty side of the game if you like, we can play.

"We did what we had to do and are still in the competition."

Clarke also praised goalkeeper Angus Gunn who atoned for his error-strewn display against Germany with some vital saves to earn his team a draw.

He said: "You need your goalkeeper to make some good saves.

"He made two or three big saves and that’s what you need. I am really pleased for him."
