Andy Murray hopes to be fit for Wimbledon after Queen's injury withdrawal

Andy Murray hopes that a back injury does not rob him of a farewell appearance at Wimbledon.

The British tennis star had to retire injured in the early stages of his Queen's match against Jordan Thompson on Wednesday (19.06.24) and is hoping that it won't prevent him from competing at SW19 next month.

Murray said: "Let's hope it will be OK with some rest and treatment, and I'll still be able to play [at Wimbledon].

"I don't know exactly what the problem is. I hadn't experienced that before.

"I have no idea how long it will take to get better and what the treatment options are."

The former world number one appeared uncomfortable from the start of the match and admitted that he shouldn't have played at all.

Murray explained: "When I walked up the stairs before going out, and in the pre-match warm-up, my back was uncomfortable.

"It was an awkward atmosphere because everyone could see there was a problem and I didn't know if I should play or stop. It's disappointing.

"In hindsight I wish I hadn't gone on the court."

The three-time Grand Slam winner explained that the problem was "a loss of strength, coordination and control" in his right leg and something he had not suffered before.

He said: "The treatment I had on my back after the French Open was predominantly left-sided. This was my right leg.

"I have dealt with back issues for a long time, for the last 10 years or so, and it's probably quite common for a lot of players.

"But I have never experienced that before."
