Andy Murray yet to make Wimbledon decision after back surgery

Andy Murray has not made a decision about his participation at Wimbledon.

The British tennis ace had a procedure on a back injury at the weekend which has raised doubts about whether he will compete at SW19 in what could be his farewell appearance at the Grand Slam event but the player is keeping his options open.

Murray's team said in a statement: "Following his surgery on Saturday, Andy is continuing to work with his medical team to confirm when he will return to the court.

"At this stage, no decisions have been made and we will update further as soon as anything has been finalised."

A report in the Daily Telegraph newspaper on Sunday (23.06.24) said that Murray would not be playing at Wimbledon after undergoing surgery on a spinal cyst but the nature of the procedure has not been confirmed by the player or his team.

Murray is expected to bring an end to his tennis career this summer and said that it would be "fitting" to finish at either SW19 or the Olympic Games in Paris.

The former world number one said: "Probably if I was going to finish my career I would rather finish at Wimbledon or an Olympic Games - to me that would probably be more fitting.

"I've had amazing experiences and memories from Wimbledon, but also being part of British Olympics teams."

Murray explained that it was important to get the timing of his retirement decision as he still has a desire to play the sport.

He said: "There are lots of things to factor in to retirement from sport.

"I think in lots of careers, retirement is something you celebrate and people really look forward to that day – that's not something I feel. I love playing tennis.

"Ultimately, if physically you're not able to play to the level you want to, the results are not as you wish, those things factor into the decision."
