John Stones: England need a big performance to silence Euro 2024 critics

John Stones has challenged England to put in a "huge" performance against Slovenia at Euro 2024.

The Three Lions conclude their Group C programme in Tuesday's (25.06.24) game and Stones thinks that a convincing win will go a long way to removing the negativity surrounding the team after a mediocre opening two matches.

Asked about the importance of a positive result, Stones said: "It would be huge. We’d all love to win three or four-nil every game.

"We’ve conceded maybe three goals in the past two Euros, it’s an incredible thing we’ve done. So, to keep a clean sheet and hopefully get a few more names on the scoresheet would be a big statement."

Stones also thinks it is important to put in a good performance to satisfy the fans who have travelled out to Germany to support the team.

The centre-back said: "You see the support, everyone that comes over and makes the trip, we absolutely love it seeing everyone in there.

"We’ve got to give them something to thrive off even more. We love the support, we walk out on the pitch and see all the flags and everything out there. If we can have a big performance, that will make everything feel so much better."

Many pundits called for Gareth Southgate to make changes in the wake of the dismal draw against Denmark last week but the manager will not "rip everything up" even though a place in the last 16 is secured.

He said: "The big risk is you have a knee-jerk reaction and you move away from things that are going well.

"Your best players are still your best players. We might not have functioned as a team as we would have liked, but that doesn’t mean what we’ve been doing for the last two years in particular, and the period before that, should be thrown out of the window."
