Ralf Rangnick not ruling out Euro 2024 glory for Austria

Ralf Rangnick isn't ruling out Euro 2024 glory for Austria.

Das Team surprisingly topped Group D ahead of France and the Netherlands after a 3-2 win against the latter on Tuesday (25.06.24) and the coach refused to write off his team's chances of an against-the-odds triumph.

Rangnick said: "I have said months ago, I don’t think it is very probable to win the Euros.

"If someone asked me if I can completely rule it out, it is still not very likely. The lads want to go as far as possible."

Austria are seen as dark horses for the tournament and Rangnick felt that finishing top of the group was a deserved reward for a "courageous and energetic" performance against the Dutch.

The coach said: "To finish top of the group then, that is incredible.

"The probability of us winning here and France not winning, if you had a bet you would be a very rich man or woman. We got rewarded for this courageous and energetic performance."

Meanwhile, Austria captain Marcel Sabitzer is optimistic about the team's chances of going deep into the tournament.

He said: "The statistics and the betting odds have their own language, but we have made the first step.

"It has been a very difficult group, but once you are in a knockout system you can have a run.

"We are just focusing on the next game and we have the quality to beat any opponent."
