Andy Murray to make Wimbledon decision 'as late as possible'

Andy Murray will decide "as late as possible" whether he will be able to play at Wimbledon.

The British tennis ace has returned to training after having surgery on a back issue last weekend and plans to leave it until the last moment to see if he will be fit to make a swansong appearance at the All England Club.

Murray said: "I'm going to wait until the last minute to see if I'm going to be able to play and I've earned that right to do that.

"This is not clear-cut where I am 100 per cent going to be ready to play or there is a 0 per cent chance that I can play. That is the situation."

The former world number one had been planning to play in both singles and doubles with his brother Jamie at SW19 but admits that his fitness issues mean that only the latter could be possible.

Murray said: "I would say it's probably more likely that I'm not able to play singles right now."

The three-time major winner was forced to withdraw from Queen's last week due to injury and hopes to bow out as a tennis player having competed in a "proper match".

He said: "I've had the conversation with my family and I have a family holiday booked the week after the Olympics. I'm not planning on going over to New York [for the US Open].

"But then I also don't want the last time that I played on a tennis court to be what happened at Queen's either.

"Because of what I put into the sport over the last however many years, I would at least like to go out playing a proper match where I'm at least competitive, not what happened at Queen's."
