Teofimo Lopez 'cries it out' in the boxing gym

Teofimo Lopez credits “crying it out” while boxing as his “coping mechanism”.

The 26-year-old fighter has spoken candidly in the past about feeling suicidal, and he’s admitted he turns to his sport in his darkest times as an outlet for his emotions.

He told Boxing News magazine: “When I’m going through hard times, more than ever now, especially during these fight camps, it’s always like this, it ends up being my biggest task.

“But what do I do now? I learn towards my work ethic and my boxing.

“I cry it out. I go in the ring or I hit the bag and I cry it out.

“That’s my coping mechanism since I was a young kid. Somewhere along the journey, I lost a bit of that.”

Teofimo’s “decompression” rituals mean he can sometimes be found in the boxing gym in the middle of the night.

He continued: “Just a few days ago was the last time I cried.

“When I absorb energy that is negative around me, it puts me in a bad state and what I don’t like is that.

“I have to pretty much decompress and get myself out of it.

“So, at three in the morning, I go to the boxing gym.

“I was tired. I went back to the gym to get the best version of me.

“I was finished by near six in the morning, just crying it out.

“I was doing my boxing and stuff but I was just crying it out in those moments.

“I love it because I’m doing my sport, my main thing. It makes sense.”
