Marc Guehi staying humble amid England praise

Marc Guehi has played down his performances for England at Euro 2024.

The centre-back has been a rare bright spot as the Three Lions have struggled through the group stages although he is just "grateful" to be experiencing a major international tournament for the first time.

Reflecting on the praise, Guehi said: "It is nice to hear. I wouldn't say I have been the best player.

"I think there have been quite a few really good performances in my opinion. I am just enjoying the tournament, I'm enjoying being here. Just really grateful."

Gareth Southgate has been questioned for England's lack of flair at the tournament so far but Guehi has nothing but praise for the coach.

The Crystal Palace defender said: "We have got a really close, tight-knit group focused on the next game.

"Everyone is appreciative of him but especially me, giving me my debut for England and showing so much confidence in me. I am really grateful and I am sure the rest of the team is."

England will take on Slovakia in their last 16 clash on Sunday (30.06.24) but Guehi has rubbished suggestions that England have a favourable draw after avoiding the section that features Germany, Spain, France, Belgium and Portugal.

He said: "I think everyone has seen in this competition that there is not a favourable side of the draw.

"Every team, every opponent is really tough to come up against. I think we need to remain calm.

"We have put pressure on ourselves but we are calm and focused and we need to continue to focus on one thing at a time.

"I think what builds confidence is togetherness, performances, the fact we haven't lost a game yet, which is really important.

"All the other things you can't really control. I think it's important we just control what we can control and that's remaining focused and dealing with whatever obstacles are put in front of us."
