The 24-year-old boxer has switched back to super-flyweight to face off against Juan Francisco Estrada, but during his training, he became a dad for the first time and he feels more “complete” having his family by his side.
He told Boxing News magazine: “It’s been amazing.
“I did two weeks of training camp back in San Antonio just so I could be with my baby, because she was born two weeks before I started training.
“I did a little bit of training there and I came to Riverside for a week by myself. Then I brought them out here for three weeks.
“Just having them around made me feel more complete, more at home, and more comfortable.
“Honestly, I felt a lot more motivated having them around.”
And Jesse is thankful for the support of his partner.
He added: “I give all the credit to my girlfriend. The first two weeks, I was waking up with my baby, but once I started training, my girlfriend understood and took over and she never even complained once.
“I give her a lot of props for that.”
Jesse also feels better for moving from flyweight back to super-flyweight.
He explained: “Fighting at 112lbs was a little difficult.
“Not necessarily in camp, but towards the last few days of making weight.
“I did struggle a little bit.
“But fighting back at 115, I feel a lot more comfortable.
“My [meal] portions aren’t as small as they were at 112, so that’s helped a lot, and I just feel a lot stronger overall.”
