Andy Murray withdraws from Wimbledon singles due to injury

Andy Murray has withdrawn from the Wimbledon singles through injury.

The British ace had been scheduled to play against Tomas Machac in the first-round on Tuesday (02.07.24) but has been unable to recover from a back issue in time after he had surgery 10 days ago.

Murray will instead play doubles alongside his older brother Jamie in what is set to be his farewell appearance at the All England Club.

The former world number one's team said in a statement: "Unfortunately, despite working incredibly hard on his recovery since his operation just over a week ago, Andy has taken the very difficult decision not to play the singles this year.

"As you can imagine, he is extremely disappointed but has confirmed that he will be playing in the doubles with Jamie and looks forward to competing at Wimbledon for the last time."

Wimbledon organisers said they were "sorry to hear" about Murray's withdrawal from the singles event.

They said in a statement: "We are so looking forward to seeing you compete in the doubles and celebrating all the memories you have given us."

Murray explained that he wanted to gain a sense of "closure" in his final Wimbledon outing after experiencing so much success at SW19.

He said: "I don’t think there’s one thing that I’m hoping for.

"When it comes to the end, I don’t know, maybe a bit of closure. I just want the opportunity to play one more time out there hopefully on Centre Court, and I don’t know, feel that buzz."
