Ivan Toney wants Harry Kane partnership for Euro 2040 quarter final

Ivan Toney is hoping Gareth Southgate will let England play with two forwards during Euro 2024.

The Brentford striker was incredibly frustrated to brought on in the 94th minute of England's win over Slovakia - which saw him set up an extra time winner for Harry Kane - and he has agreed with Germany legends Jurgen Klinsmann's suggested that the national team could benefit from a 4-4-2 formation against Switzerland.

Speaking before this weekend's quarter-final, he said: "Obviously I would like to be playing as a two but that is the gaffer’s choice.

"We have to respect that. Everyone wants to play, whether that is a two or as one I will do my best for the squad.”

The 28-year-old star linked up well with Kane by heading across goal and allowing the Bayern Munich striker to nod the ball in the net, and he had advised his teammate to "be there for the knock-downs".

He thinks that pairing could be well utilised by England, if Southgate decides to go that route.

Toney explained: "We’ve played with each other and watched each other plenty of times.

“We’ll know what each other is the best at. You put yourself about when there’s two up front.

“I’d knock it back to H and he could just pick up seconds and he was able to do that.”

Southgate has admitted Toney was "disgusted" at being brought on so late in the Slovakia game, and the player himself has admitted he was desperate to get on before the "dying moments".

He added: "You’re looking at the clock thinking, ‘Now, now’. Then it came in the dying moments.

"But if I wasn’t annoyed sitting on the bench, then I see it as you wouldn’t have the right attitude and don’t really want to play football.

“I think my face said it all! Everything is sorted now, we’re friends — not like we weren’t friends — but we’re happy now and concentrating on the next game.”
