Phil Foden 'frustrated' things aren't clicking with England teammates in Euro 2024

Phil Foden has been "a little frustrated" by the apparent lack of chemistry between England players on the pitch

The 24-year-old Manchester City ace was named player of the season after an impressive campaign for the Premier League winners, but he's yet to click with Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka as the national team struggled through their first four games in Euro 2024.

Speaking at England's media centre before this weekend's quarter-final game with Switzerland, he said: "I don’t know but I’ve been a little frustrated. I am not going to lie.

“I want to score, to do better things for England. It has not worked out but it is about keeping a good mentality.

"I have not been the best player in the Premier League to come here and not show it.

“I feel like every game, I have been moving forward and hopefully, I can put on some good performances and that has always been my aim for England.”

England manager Gareth Southgate has been accused of not using his players in their best positions, with Foden placed out on the left wing, despite playing best in a more central role.

The player added: "I have always been honest about my position and seen myself as playing in midfield. Even though I have started on the left for England, I’ve drifted into those other positions.

“It is more how we have been on the ball. They have not been able to find me because of the way the games have gone."

However, he shrugged off the suggestion that when he's drifting in from the left hand side, he ends up in too similar a position to Bellingham.

He argued: "I don’t agree with that, I feel we do work good together.

“It’s just the way the games have gone sometimes and the way football works, [but] I feel like in the last game we did build on it really well, in terms of keeping the ball.

"We piled pressure on at the end and it can hopefully click together.”
