Emma Raducanu was 'top of the list' for Andy Murray's mixed doubles partnership

Emma Raducanu was "top of the list" to become Andy Murray's mixed doubles partner.

The 37-year-old tennis legend is playing at Wimbledon for the final time before his retirement later in the year, and while he has pulled out of the singles competition following a back operation, he will join older brother Jamie in the men;s doubles, before teaming up with fellow Brit Emma.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday (03.07.24), he described her as "obviously one of the top British players", and said she was his first choice for a mixed doubles pairing.

He explained: "I was chatting to my team and discussing mixed, so I messaged her coach and asked if he thought it might be something she’d be up for doing. He said it was worth asking, so I did.

"Thankfully, I got a quick reply. She said, ‘Yeah, let’s do it’. That was it."

Murray previously teamed up with American legend Serena Williams in the mixed doubles at Wimbledon in 2019

The mixed doubles will get underway on Friday (05.07.24), with the duo taking on Chica's Zhang Shuai and El Salvador player Marcelo Arevalo.

Andy added: "I chatted a bit with my team about [mixed doubles] and they said 'what exactly are you trying to get out of it?'

"Firstly, we want to be competitive in the matches - and playing with another Brit was going to be something that would be nice."

Emma has admitted the partnership is a "dream" come true.

She said: "My doubles record isn't exactly the longest or the most vast but I couldn’t say no. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

"It’s been a dream of mine since I was a young girl. Andy’s a hero to us all. It's a real gift and a real honour that he asked me."
