Turkey defender Merih Demiral handed two-match ban over ultra-nationalist salute

Turkey defender Merih Demiral handed two-match ban over ultra-nationalist salute

Turkey defender Merih Demiral has been handed a two-match ban for making an ultra-nationalist salute during his country's Euro 2024 victory against Austria.

The 26-year-old played a pivotal role in the match – scoring both goals in Turkey's 2-1 win – securing a quarter-final spot against the Netherlands on Saturday. (06.7.24)

But the Al-Ahli defender's celebration of his second goal involved a “wolf salute” – associated with the far-right extremist group Grey Wolves, which is linked to Turkey's National Movement Party.

The gesture is banned in Austria and France and was reportedly pre-planned by Demiral.

He said: “The salute was premeditated in case I scored in the last-16 tie.”

UEFA, European football's governing body, charged Demiral for failing to comply with general principles of conduct, violating the basic rules of decent conduct, using sports events for manifestations of a non-sporting nature, and bringing the sport of football into disrepute.

Meanwhile, Jude Bellingham has been cleared to play in England's quarter-final against Switzerland on Saturday despite making a controversial gesture during his celebration in the last-16 win over Slovakia.

The Real Madrid midfielder, 21, received a suspended one-match ban for a year and a £25,400 fine for his crotch-grabbing celebration.

Demiral’s actions have sparked significant controversy, reflecting ongoing tensions surrounding the intersection of sports and politics.

UEFA's decision underscores its commitment to maintaining the integrity of football and ensuring that the sport is not used as a platform for non-sporting expressions.

As Turkey prepares for their crucial match against the Netherlands, Demiral's absence will undoubtedly be felt by the squad – with his actions also being slammed by fans for casting a shadow over Turkey's impressive run in the tournament.
