Arne Slot is aware of Liverpool and Man Utd rivalry

Arne Slot did not need to be educated about Liverpool's rivalry with Manchester United.

The Dutch coach takes charge of the Reds for the first time in the fixture as the enemies clash in the Premier League on Sunday (01.09.24) and is completely aware of the significance of the game to his new club.

Slot said: "Some of them tried to tell me a few things, but I don’t think that it’s really necessary.

"If you start to work at Liverpool, I think everyone knows how big. It’s similar to how you work at Feyenoord, how big the Ajax game is. If you follow the game of football, which I do, you know."

Slot will be up against his fellow Dutch manager Erik ten Hag during the match and the Liverpool boss insists that he isn't friends with the United coach.

He said: "No friends. Friends is something else.

"We have a very good relationship, but a friend is someone you see a lot, you go out with and go out with for dinner. That’s not something we’ve done in the past. We don’t know each other well enough.

"Our relationship is as good and as normal as the relationship with many other managers. Rene Hake and Ruud van Nistelrooy have joined him at United and the relationship is also very good, all of us respect each other a lot.

"They have been successful, all three of them at the clubs they’ve worked at in the past."

The Reds signed Federico Chiesa from Juventus this week in a £10 million deal but Slot says he is unlikely to be involved this weekend.

He said: "There’s a bigger chance that he’s not in the squad for Sunday than he is, but if injuries come up in two days, we we might need him.

"I don’t expect him to be in, but we might need him."
