Raygun apologises to breaking community after Olympics mockery

Rachael 'Raygun' Gunn has apologised to the breaking community for her widely-mocked performance at the Olympics.

The Australian B-girl made headlines around the globe for her controversial appearance in Paris last month as she was eliminated in the round-robin stage - for a routine that included her flailing on the floor and hopping in the style of a kangaroo - and she has now expressed regret for the backlash her participation caused.

Raygun told The Project: "There’s been a portion of very angry and, you know, awful responses, not only attacking me but attacking my husband, attacking my crew, attacking the breaking and street dance community in Australia, my family,

"The energy and vitriol that people had was pretty alarming.

"It is really sad to hear those criticisms, and I am very sorry for the backlash that the community has experienced, but I can’t control how people react."

Raygun insists that she is the best female breaker in Australia and said she qualified for the Olympics by winning the Oceana qualifier where she did not know any of the judges.

She explained: "I was super nervous about it, to be honest, because even though I’d won all these competitions in Australia I was nervous about winning this one because it was all new judges."

Raygun previously released a social media statement where she described criticism of her performance as "devastating".

The Olympian said: "I really appreciate the positivity and I’m glad I was able to bring some joy into your lives. That’s what I hoped.

"I didn’t realise that would also open the door to so much hate which has, frankly, been pretty devastating."
