Alex Winwood excited about title shot

Alex Winwood “jumped out of [his] skin” when he found out he was getting a shot at a world title.

The 27-year-old boxer has just fights behind him but will be facing reigning WBA minimumweight champion Thammanoon Niyomtrong this weekend, and he’s thrilled to have the chance to break the Australian record of winning a world title in the fewest number of fights.”

He told Boxing News magazine: “I found out the news simultaneously that the opponent had changed, that the WBC title eliminator we had was off, and that we were now fighting for the WBA world title.

“I couldn’t believe that I was going to fight for a title. I jumped out of my skin.

“I was getting introduced to the Premier of Western Australia and he asked me about my latest fight coming up – that’s when my management broke the news to him and me at the same time. I was just ecstatic.”

Alex is “hugely respectful” of his Thai opponent but still fancies his chances.

He said: “He’s the main man in the division.

“He’s held the belt the longest, a real veteran of the sport.

“I know that he is going to have a lot of tricks that he’s learned over his time.

“He’s got a huge amount of experience and I’m very respectful of that.

“I think old age might be getting to him a bit and the long layoff won’t suit him too well.

“He will bring his best to the fight though, as he has always done and passed with flying colours.

“I just think there are a lot of factors swinging in my way.”
