Hakan Ericson reveals 'challenge' for Faroe Islands players

Hakan Ericson admitted it is a “challenge” to get other countries to look at his Faroe Islands players.

The 64-year-old coach has been in charge of the archipelago’s side since 2019 and while he is proud some of his squad are playing for clubs in Iceland, Denmark, Norway, Poland, North Macedonia and the Republic of Ireland, he wishes scouts in other territories would take a chance on some of his other players.

He told World Soccer magazine: “The biggest challenge is not so many scouts know enough about the Faroe Islands and the national league.

“Maybe they are afraid to recommend a player from the country because of what they think clubs might say, but I tell scouts and clubs, ‘Why not have a look at our players?’

“They are a lot better than people realise, with the technical quality of the players being good, so that isn’t an issue.

“While we do have some players playing abroad, I think it would be beneficial for football in the country if more did.”

Hakan has helped instil a sense of belief into his squad.

He said: “Belief is a big part. You must have self-belief, otherwise it really is impossible to achieve your goals, so that is one area we have worked on.

“Bringing in more support staff, mental training was one area, enabling players to speed up decision making.

“We have an experienced physio team and we brought in a video analyst, something the country didn’t have before.”
