Anthony Joshua: Boxing is going through a golden era

Anthony Joshua thinks he is competing in a "golden era" of boxing.

The British fighter is looking to become a three-time heavyweight world champion against Daniel Dubois on Saturday (21.09.24) and says the fact that the contest is being held in front of a record crowd at Wembley Stadium highlights how much the sport has captured the attention of the masses.

Speaking at the Riyadh Season Grand Arrivals ahead of the fight, Joshua said: "I’m confident. I believe in myself and I think that’s the right mentality to have. Even though I’m home, it’s not small. They’ve made it massive. I’m fighting a Queensberry fighter as well.

"So it’s a new age for boxing, a golden era if you ask me. And I hope that the next generation coming through can benefit from all this as well. It’s not just about our generation."

It will be the first time that Joshua has fought at Wembley since his victory over Ukrainian great Wladimir Klitschko in 2017 and he thinks the experience gained since then leaves him in good stead for his second contest at the venue.

The boxer said: "I used to be in that flow state and then opponents will still be there six, seven rounds later. That’s the thing that I learned early on, because I started fighting good fighters early.

"For example, when I fought Klitschko, I dropped him in the fifth and I thought he was going to be like everyone else, but he stayed in there. And I was like, this ain’t normal, but it’s another level of boxer. So I just learned, control the moment, don’t let the moment control me.

"If I one-two hurt you, the smarter option would be to throw a one-two again. I just learned with Ngannou, take my time. If I hurt him once, I know I can do it again."
