Jannik Sinner urges tennis stars to take responsibility after schedule complaints

Jannik Sinner doesn't have any problems with the tennis schedule.

The world number one has told players to be responsible for the number of events they play following recent complaints from Carlos Alcaraz and Jack Draper about the amount of tournaments that they are expected to compete in during the year.

Sinner said: "The schedule is quite long, obviously. But we players, we can still choose what to play and what not to play.

"Obviously we have some mandatory events, yes. As a player, you can still choose. It is a very busy schedule this year, there are a lot of tournaments. You don't have to play a tournament."

Sinner is getting ready to play at the China Open in Beijing later this week explained that he has previously chosen to skip tournaments in order to practice instead and says that this is an option for all players on the tour.

The two-time Grand Slam winner said: "If you want, you can play. If not, you don't play.

"For example, last year and also this year, I didn't play some tournaments because I wanted to practice. There are some choices behind this."

Sinner claimed his second major title of 2024 at the US Open earlier this month and said that the triumph in New York was extra special as it came following a "very difficult" period after it emerged that he had cleared after testing positive for a banned substance in the lead-up to the tournament.

Sinner said: "This title means so much because the last period of my career was not easy.

"It [the investigation] was and still is on my mind. It's not that it's gone, but when I'm on court, I try to handle the situation the best possible way.

"I'm happy how I handled this one. I'm just excited to have this trophy with me."
