Son Heung-min: Footballers are not robots

Son Heung-min has warned football's authorities to take the issue of player welfare "really seriously".

A number of top Premier League players have spoken out about the demands placed on them by the fixture schedule - with Manchester City's Rodri even suggesting that stars could go on strike - and the Tottenham captain has weighed in on the matter.

Son said: "A lot of players came out and said the right things and I think it was very important that someone actually came out to say the right things.

"Players are the main guys to have to say something and it's definitely a lot of games. As a football fan you want to see a quality game, not as many games as possible, and you don't want to see people or players struggling with injuries, which nobody wants to see.

"It's definitely a lot of games, a lot of travelling [so] we have to look after ourselves which is sometimes very hard, and sometimes mentally and physically you're not ready and when you're going onto the pitch then the risk of injury is massive.

"We are not robots, so I think we just definitely have to look after that and definitely reduce the games and can play a better quality of game. I think this should be the aim."

The Spurs forward admits that he would prefer not to go on strike and called on governing bodies like UEFA and FIFA to put footballer's interests at heart.

The South Korean international said: "No, you want to go to the final and play a lot of games. That's a different scenario, but what I want to say is that the platform, for example, the Champions League changed to play even more games and I think this is not right to look after players.

"What we can do is that we definitely can change it and we can definitely go in a good way that people can look after the players."
