Prince William cheers Aston Villa to famous Champions League win against Bayern Munich

Prince William "lost his voice" roaring Aston Villa to victory against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

The Prince of Wales watched the action at Villa Park as the Midlands club played their first home game in Europe's top competition for more than 40 years on Wednesday (02.10.24) and couldn't contain his delight as a goal from Jhon Duran gave his team a famous win.

After the match, William said: "I've lost my voice... I can't quite believe it. 42 years!"

Prior to the game, the royal had met Villa legends who were part of the team that won the European Cup back in 1982 - where the club also defeated the German giants 1-0.

A post on Kensington Palace's social media account said: "42 years on, our 1982 European Cup winning legends are here on an historic night for Aston Villa.

"Ready for the first game on home turf in this year's European adventure... Up The Villa!"

William has supported Villa since he was at school and explained that he made the decision to back the club because he didn't want to follow a "run-of-the-mill team" like his friends did.

He said: "All my friends were Chelsea or Manchester United fans and I didn't really want to follow the run-of-the-mill team.

"I wanted to have a team that was more mid-table that could give me more emotional rollercoaster moments. Aston Villa has always had a great history."

Duran caught out Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer from long range for the winning goal and manager Unai Emery said it was a vulnerability his team targeted.

He explained: "In the analysis we did of them [Bayern], we were aware, we were speaking a lot about how the position of Neuer is usually always high.

"I knew how he [Duran] would shoot because he had in his mind this possibility with Neuer."
