Jack Butland eyes England return

Jack Butland wants to play for England again.

The Rangers goalkeeper made his debut for the national side in 2012 and went on to make nine appearances until 2018, and he’d love to get another call-up.

He told FourFourTwo magazine: “I’ve always said I’d like to go back, but with the change of set-up, it’s difficult.

“I hope my performances in Europe show I could be a part of it, despite not competing in the Premier League as three or four others are.”

The 31-year-old sportsman was just 19 years old and had only played in League Two for Cheltenham when he got his call up for Euro 2012 and he will always be grateful for the support and guidance he received from the rest of the squad.

He said: “I remember the first call-up before the Euros, meeting up at the Grove Hotel in London.

“I walked in at lunchtime and sat between John Terry and Frank Lampard. I don’t know if they had a clue who I was!

“At Euro 2012, I was cannon fodder for a month in shooting drills against Lampard, Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard. The standard was just… wow.

“Joe Hart was a massive help because he was at Birmingham when I was there as a kid.

“Joe’s an incredible character.

“It was great to be there and I don’t remember a moment in the tournament where I was treated disrespectfully or wasn’t helped along.”
