Campbell Hatton's hard conversation

Campbell Hatton's hard conversation

Campbell Hatton has admitted it was a “difficult conversation to have” when he fired his uncle as his trainer.

The 23-year-old super-lightweight – who is the son of boxing legend Ricky Hatton – knew he needed to “freshen up” his preparations after suffering the first loss of his career against Jimmy Joe Flint so decided to call time on the eight-year partnership he’d enjoyed with Matthew Hatton.

He told Boxing News magazine: “It wasn’t that the fight triggered the conversation, it was already needed a little bit.

“When I first turned pro, we saw massive improvement in my first 12 months and then I sort of plateaued a bit.

“The progression had slowed down a bit and it wasn’t really anyone’s fault – we had just been doing the same things for a long time and needed a freshen up.

“It was a difficult conversation to have because me and Matthew have always been very close and we still are.

“But we were on the same page with it – when we brought it up there was no shock to it, we both knew it was needed.

“He wished me the best with it and he was checking in with me.”

Campbell is now working with Ben Davison’s Performance Centre and living with Luke and Pat McCormack and Royston Barney-Smith.

And the boxer feels invigorated by his new routine.

He said: “I’ve been loving it. I’d been training with Matthew for probably about seven or eight years, so this is all new. It’s exciting and I’m really enjoying it.

“The fighters in the gym are the best of the best so it’s bringing me on loads.

“Working with everyone down here has got me feeling like a different fighter already.

“It was the best thing we could have done, because I’ve improved more in the six months I’ve been coming here than I have in my whole career.”
