Erik ten Hag curses Man Utd bad luck as Red Devils lose again in Premier League

Erik ten Hag was left furious as Manchester United fell to an "unfair and unjust" defeat to West Ham.

United lost 2-1 in Sunday's (27.10.24) Premier League clash after Jarrod Bowen converted a controversial late penalty for the Hammers and the coach was angered by the intervention of the video assistant referee (VAR) in the decision to give a spot-kick against his team.

Ten Hag told 'Match of the Day': "Before the season there was the instruction about VAR only interfering in clear and obvious mistakes.

"That is definitely not a clear and obvious mistake from the on-field referee."

The United boss spoke with the officials after the match in protest at the decision and he feels that his team have been given a raw deal by referees so far this season.

He said: "I spoke with them. But the decision is made. There's no way back and that's football.

"That's a third time I have felt injustice in the season and it has a big impact on our team and on our scores and where we are in the table. It's not right."

United are down in 14th in the Premier League table after losing four of their opening nine games this season but Ten Hag is confident that their fortunes will take a turn for the better despite the considerable pressure on him.

He said: "In this moment, definitely the luck is not on my side [but] it's not about me, it's about the team, and it's not on our side. And last season was not different, but in the end, we turned this around and we are [were] so determined it would be the same case today. But we have to turn this around and it will turn around if we keep playing like we are playing now and, in this block - Brentford, Fenerbahce, today, we played really good football."
