The Red Devils have decided to relieve the Dutch coach of his duties following the 2-1 loss to West Ham on Sunday (27.10.24) that leaves the club 14th in the Premier League table.
United have won just three out of their nine league games so far this term and have also drawn all three of their matches in the Europa League.
Former United player Ruud van Nistelrooy - who joined the coaching staff as Ten Hag's assistant manager in the summer - will take interim charge of the team until a permanent replacement is found.
Ten Hag arrived at United in 2022 and guided the club to a third-place finish and League Cup glory in an impressive first season as manager - which included the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo after he explosively criticised Ten Hag during an interview with Piers Morgan.
However, United slipped to eighth last season after a dismal league campaign but Old Trafford chiefs kept faith in Ten Hag after their surprising win in the FA Cup final against rivals Manchester City.
The manager was given a new three-year contract but has been axed just three months later.
A United statement read: "Erik ten Hag has left his role as Manchester United men’s first-team manager.
"Erik was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the Carabao Cup in 2023 and the FA Cup in 2024.
"We are grateful to Erik for everything he has done during his time with us and wish him well for the future.
"Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited."
