The former heavyweight world champion was sent to the canvass four times in a devastating loss to his countryman and Whyte was confused by his former rival's behaviour in the ring.
The fighter told talkSPORT: "AJ seemed to be very good or very bad, it's never in the middle.
"Last few years he seems to be there or he's not there. He's achieved so much for the game so I don't want to be disrespectful.
"He's there or not there, AJ's a weird one. You can never understand what he's going to do.
"If you look at the fight, AJ is just standing there spaced out and staring for five minutes. He seemed like he wasn't there.
"It was so weird, he was jabbing and retreating. He wasn't do anything offensive."
Whyte lost to Joshua when the pair fought back in 2015 and explained that he would prefer a rematch instead of a fight with former world champion Deontay Wilder.
He said: "I'd still definitely fight AJ next.
"I really hate Deontay Wilder, but I have been stopped by AJ.
"I have never been stopped by Wilder so I'd still love to get that one back [in a rematch]."
Whyte was scheduled to fight Joshua again last year but the bout was scrapped after there was an adverse finding in his doping test and explained that he unleashed his pent-up rage in his comeback win over Christian Hammer in March.
He told Boxing Social: "It’s good to be back out and it’s good to get back to work. Obviously Hammer came out swinging and then the pitbull in me just bit back, then I was rushing and making stupid mistakes, but whatever."
