The Oyonnax boss has joined the team as defence coach following the shock departure of Felix Jones – who left shortly after S+C guru Aled Walters also departed the side – and while he, head coach Steve Borthwick and the other backroom staff know what they want to do, he insisted it will take time.
Joe told Rugby World magazine: “We want to put the opposition under pressure. That’s not going to change.
“The DNA of England rugby is being tough and getting off the line.
“We’re going to take what’s been really good, and there’s been lots of really good over the last two years, not just the last eight games, and we’re going to reinforce that and see where we can go.
“It is not going to happen overnight but we know where we want to go and we will work slowly towards that. That’s exciting.”
The 44-year-old former flanker insisted fans shouldn’t worry about the changes in the coaching team as Steve has been there to offer stability.
He said: “In any sport, you see it in football, you see it in rugby, having a cohesive coaching team is important.
“Does that mean that there’s never any changes? No.
“I’m just going to use Alex Ferguson as an example. Alex Ferguson stayed for a long time and was pretty successful.
“He didn’t always have the same coaches. It’s quite rare that they lasted for more than three or four years.
“But he stayed and he knew he had the identity of Manchester United. I think that’s the most important.
“So if we can create that cohesion together as a coaching group, I think that’s only positive to help the players get better and that’s our job.”
