The 27-year-old footballer still hasn’t committed the verse to memory but finds it reassuring to read before she goes on the pitch as it reminds her of the love and support she has around her.
Asked if she has any pre-match rituals, she told Britain’s Cosmopolitan magazine: “I have a poem that my dad wrote me when I was 17, and I read it before every game.
“You’d think I would know it off by heart by now but no.
“It’s a reminder that there’s somebody who loves you no matter what happens.
“It needs reprinting actually, it’s kind of worse for wear.”
The Arsenal ace also likes to bring her team together through music.
Discussing her pre-match playlist, she said: “At the moment, it’s ‘Fairground’ by Simply Red and ‘Nobody To Love’ by Sigma. And a bit of Tems.
“[Before a game] everybody mills around doing their own thing, then there’s a point at which everyone will be changed, ready and waiting.
“And that’s when I would typically ramp it up, so to speak.”
Leah takes inspiration from her teammates.
Asked who inspires her, she said: “My mum and my grandma, who are strong women and have always lived their lives the way they wanted to.
“I’m inspired by my team. People such as Jen Beattie, who had cancer and beat it, and still plays at the highest level.
“For the whole team to see that, and for fans… On a human level, it’s pretty incredible.”
