Finn Russell isn't a 'risky' player

Finn Russell has insisted his gameplay isn't "risky".

The 32-year-old fly half finds it frustrating that some of his most outlandish moves on the field have been "off the cuff" or "lucky" because he works so hard on and off the pitch studying the game.

He told Telegraph Sport: "I think that saying that it is off the cuff, it is not always off the cuff and sort of lucky.

"These things that you are seeing in the lead up to the game, skills that I will have practised on the training on the pitch, there’s lot of skills that you practise and the more you watch and study the more you pick up on the different body languages and skills and signs of where to put the ball.

“It might seem off the cuff for a lot of people, but that’s the images I see on the pitch. I don’t see it as off the cuff. I don’t see it as risky. That’s my style of play. "

Finn stressed the importance of being able to "build" his knowledge of the game and his opposition, as well as the value of his relationships with his teammates in order to pull off moments of briliance.

He added: "Off the cuff to me is building knowledge of the game, building those partnerships with your team-mates and then with the stats you can get when you are analysing the opposition you can see that the thirteen miss 70 per cent of their tackles on their left shoulder, versus 95 per cent on their right.

“There’s such fine details now and these all come into the account when you’re in the moment and you have done the work. When you get to that moment then you are not thinking, you just have to react.”
