Tiger Woods withdraws from Genesis Invitational following his mother's death

Tiger Woods has pulled out of the Genesis Invitational as he is "still processing" his mother's death.

The American golfer was due to compete in the PGA Tour event at Torrey Pines this week but says he is "not ready" to return to the course following the passing of his mother Kultida, which was announced earlier this month.

Woods wrote on social media: "I planned to tee it up this week, but I'm just not ready.

"I did my best to prepare, knowing it's what my mom would have wanted, but I'm still processing her loss.

"Thanks to everyone who has reached out. I hope to be at Torrey later in the week and appreciate the continued kindness since my mom's passing."

The 15-time major champion has not played a PGA Tour event since last year's Open Championship in July and has not competed regularly since sustaining serious injuries in a car accident in 2021.

Woods took to social media to reveal the news of his mother's death as he described her as "a force of nature all her own".

In a statement posted on X and Instagram, the former world number one said: "It is with heartfelt sadness that I want to share that my dear mother, Kultida Woods, passed away early this morning.

"My Mom was a force of nature all her own, her spirit was simply undeniable. She was quick with the needle and a laugh."

Woods insisted his own "personal achievements" were only attainable with Kultida's support, while he thanked everyone for their "prayers and privacy".

He added: "She was my biggest fan, greatest supporter, without her none of my personal achievements would have been possible.

"She was loved by so many, but especially by her two grandchildren, Sam and Charlie.

"Thank you all for your support, prayers and privacy at this difficult time for me and my family.

"Love you Mom."
