Lauren James in 'best condition ever'

Lauren James in 'best condition ever'

Lauren James believes she is “in the best condition she’s ever been in”.

The Chelsea striker’s 2024 was blighted by injury, and having recently returned forma three-month lay-off, she’s happy to be back in the England squad after a frustrating period.

She told Telegraph Sport: “It’s been a very frustrating time and quite draining.

"I think because it [the injury] was just over three months, it was quite a while for me to not be able to play or even train.

“Sometimes injuries are a sign of your body telling you that you need to step back and get stronger in those areas, it allows you to do that. Sometimes it is a blessing in disguise.

“Now I’m just happy I’m back and hopefully I can stay back. I think now I’m probably in the best condition I’ve been in.”

The 23-year-old sportswoman will always put “pressure” on herself when playing for England and thinks the team have “raised [their] standards” in response to other countries getting even better.

She said: “I think every nation is getting better each year but that also makes us raise our standards.

“I think everyone in the team believes in what we can do, I don’t think people listen to whatever goes on outside of our group.

“I always want to play for England and put on that shirt. I put pressure on myself to contribute because I think, as a forward, if you don’t contribute you feel like you haven’t done anything in that game.

“I’m just focusing on trying to stay healthy and get back to my best, contribute to Chelsea and hopefully we win trophies together and then hopefully I can take that on to the summer.”
