The 30-year-old midfielder helped The Hammers secure a 2-0 victory over the Foxes at yesterday’s (02.27.25) match at the London Stadium, but deliberately decided against his trademark move in recognition of his opponents' late owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, who died in a helicopter crash in 2018.
In a quote shared on X (formally Twitter), he said: “I didn’t think my normal helicopter celebration was the right thing to do because of what happened to the Leicester owner.
“I wanted to show respect to our opponents.”
Jarrod Bowen helped secure West Ham’s victory with his low finish deflect off Leicester’s Jannik Vestergaard, giving The Hammers their second consecutive win after beating Arsenal 1-0.
Manager Graham Potter - who replaced Julen Lopetegui last month after less than eight months in charge of the London club - said he was “delighted” to see West Ham’s winning streak continue.
He said: “Feels good. It's not easy. The turnaround from the Arsenal game was not that long. Two efforts in five days is big for us. Two clean sheets, six points, delighted.”
Leicester’s head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy admitted the Foxes lacked the “urgency” to put pressure on their opponents, which had ultimately cost them the game and had likely secured the club’s relegation from the Premier League.
He reflected: “The goals you concede are easy goals. It's a reflection of how we played in the first half.
“If you see the difference in the first and the second half, how we as a team moved forward to press the opponent, play with urgency after winning duels, in the first half we were waiting way too much. We have to put the opponent under pressure in the right way.”
