Neil Lennon: Arsenal ‘not destined’ to win Premier League with Mikel Arteta

Neil Lennon believes Arsenal are “not destined” to win the Premier League under manager Mikel Arteta.

The Gunners stuttered against Nottingham Forest on Wednesday (26.02.25) with a 0-0 draw after losing to West Ham United 0-1 - giving frontrunners Liverpool a 13-point lead - and now Lennon has admitted Arsenal likely won’t be be taking home any silverware unless big changes at the club are made.

The sports pundit is quoted by TNT Sports as saying: “You've got to keep going. Mikel will keep trying to work a formula to win it, but you think next season Man City will be back stronger. Liverpool will be there. It's just so competitive and I don't know if their chance has gone or not.”

The Gunners reportedly were interested in signing Newcastle’s Alexander Isak in January but ultimately passed on the striker, and Lennon said the player may have made Arsenal “better”, but emphasised Arteta’s leadership still may have got in the way of the club’s chances of winning the Premier League.

He explained: “Without a doubt he [Isak] would make them better, but there's something eating away at me that I don't think they're destined to win it under Arteta.”

The pundit feels there is “something missing” from Arsena and stressed the club would “regret” signing a big goalscorer in the January window.

He said: “They will regret it because they didn't bring a goalscorer in. I'm not sure even with a goalscorer that they still would have enough to pip Liverpool this season.

“I don't know, there's just something missing about Arsenal. They've gone close over the last two or three years coming up against Man City.”

Lennon’s comments were echoed by Alan Shearer, who said Arsenal had an “excellent chance” of winning the title had they signed a centre forward, regardless of injuries to key players like Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus.

He explained on ‘The Rest Is Football’ podcast: “I know they’ve got injuries but the conversation about Arsenal and a centre forward is never going away, unfortunately for Arsenal. Even when they had all their players fit.

“We said it at the beginning of the season. My title tip was Arsenal - if they got a centre forward in. But if they didn’t I didn’t fancy them and unfortunately for them injuries have caught up with them and they’re not winning the title now.”
