Helen Nelson wants rugby World Cup to inspire next generation

Helen Nelson hopes the women’s rugby World Cup will have a big impact on the “next generation”.

The 30-year-old Scot is excited for this summer’s tournament, in particular the opener against Wales, and is keen for the game to see a surge in popularity in the way women’s football has in recent years.

She told Rugby World magazine: “Being in Manchester, we know fans from both countries will be able to get there and watch us.

“I think the game is slowly building and you can feel the momentum.

“Whether you see the number of people in the stands or the amount of people following you on social media, you can feel that the engagement and the buzz has intensified and it’s building ahead of the World Cup.

“It’s hard to know now how big the size of the impact will be but I look at the women’s football Euros in 2022 and see the stadiums full and it makes you aware of the potential of the year and the impact it could have on the next generation.”

Helen is pleased the Scotland squad will have a lot of time to prepare for the tournament in comparison to the last World Cup.

She said: “For the last World Cup, much of the squad were away at the Commonwealth Games playing sevens, pretty much our whole back-line, so we only had a few weeks together before the tournament started.

“This year we are meeting as a squad a few weeks before the Six Nations and then from June we are in Edinburgh preparing for the World Cup up until August.

“That is such an exciting prospect.”
