Steve Williams worked with the legendary sportsman for 12 years – and 64 PGA Tour victories – until 2011 – and though Tiger always set “high standards” and was “very focused”, he was also “a lot of fun” to be around.
Steve told Bunkered magazine: “He’s got a little bit of a temper and he’s not afraid to show that, but, equally, he was extraordinarily generous to me and my family.
“He demanded success and he set high standards.
“Like, when I went to work for him, I considered myself to be reasonably fit.
"But his fitness was on a whole other level, so I quickly had to step it up.
“He used to say, ‘The fitter you are, the better your mind works’, and that sort of thing, so it was really a case of rolling up the sleeves and delivering.
“So yeah, he was definitely demanding but, to get to his position, you had to be.
“You can’t set your ambitions and goals that high and not have to work extraordinarily hard to reach them.
"But off the course, I think a lot of people would be surprised by how different he was.
“On the course, he was a very focused, very serious competitor. Off it, he was a lot of fun and he knew how to unwind and have a good time. He was a fantastic boss to work for.”
Steve was always in awe of Tiger’s desire to win.
He said: “For Tiger, winning was the only thing that made it a good week.
“You know, for a lot of other players, if they finish inside the top-10, the top-20, or maybe if they make the cut, they’ll consider that a somewhat successful week.
“For Tiger, if you didn’t win, you lost.”
