Lucy Bronze wants Champions League victory with Chelsea

Lucy Bronze’s “dream” is to win the Champions League with an English club.

The 33-year-old right back won the tournament three times with French side Lyon and twice with Spain’s Barcelona, and she’s hoping her side Chelsea – who she signed for last summer – can lift the trophy this year.

She told Match magazine: “Winning the Champions League with an English team has always been my dream!

“I won the Champions League for the first time at Lyon, but nothing would ever be as good as doing it with an English team.”

And Lucy admitted her dream was one of the key reasons why she signed for Chelsea.

She added: “I’m not at the start of my career so I had to make smart moves – and Chelsea are the best team to do that with.”

Lucy was also keen to work under “demanding” Chelsea boss Sonia Bompastor, who she knew from her time at Lyon.

She said: “Part of coming to Chelsea was working with Sonia Bompastor and Camille Abily again, knowing that they’re so demanding and have really high standards.

“Sonia’s been very experienced in the Champions League and that makes a huge difference.

“She did it both as a player then as a coach.”

Ahead of their Champions League semi-final against Barcelona this weekend, Lucy is feeling confident.

She said: “Chelsea have been to the final. They’ve beaten the top teams. They have broken down so many barriers beating Lyon and beating Barcelona.

"Adding that small bit at the end, it’s the biggest push but the smallest bit is needed to try and win the trophy.

“It will be a big challenge but I think we have the talent in the squad to go to the final.”
