Barry Hearn gets deja vu over similarities between Benns and Eubanks

Barry Hearn gets a “bit of déjà vu” looking at Conor Benn and Chris Eubank Jr.

The promotor worked with both boxers’ dads, Nigel Ben and Chris Eubank Sr., and he thinks there are a lot of similarities in their respective styles and rivalries.

Barry told Boxing News magazine: “The similarities are amazing. The apple hasn’t fallen far from the tree.

“I watch Conor sometimes and I think, ‘Jesus, he’s just like his dad!’ – red mist comes down and that’s it. He’s dangerous.

“Then I watch Eubank – he’s much more calculated, he believes in himself.

“He believes in everything he does to such an extent that people think it’s over-belief – but they are very similar in attitudes.

“I think Conor and Nigel are very close, Eubank always had a different relationship; one much more built on discipline and that sort of stuff which, again, I’m not averse to.

“They are different people and that is consistent with the fights before. It is a little bit déjà vu.

“I rub my eyes sometimes and think, ‘I’ve seen this all before somewhere.’ It’s like Groundhog Day!

“That builds the anticipation and the speculation and then Eubank Jr will do a silly thing with an egg and Conor will reply in the same way his dad would have, he wants to kill him on the spot.”

Barry thinks both Eubanks are “very similar” in their approaches.

He said: “They’re very similar in fight style.

“They’re very calculating. They think they have a plan for everybody, and they build around speed and defence.

“I think Eubank Jr. is a much more front foot-fighter than Eubank Sr. ever was.

“Chris Sr. was one of the great counter-punchers. Eubank Jr. throws in clusters very well, it’s just a question of whether he has the same power.”
