Bruno Fernandes says Manchester United 'can't hide behind' Hojlund's goal struggles

Bruno Fernandes has insisted Manchester United "can't hide behind" Rasmus Hojlund's goal scoring struggles.

The Denmark striker - who cost £72 million when he was brought to the club under previous manager Erik ten Haag - scored his first goal in seven games when he netted an injury-time equaliser at Bournemouth over the weekend, which marked only his ninth all season.

United captain Bruno said: "We can't hide behind Rasmus not scoring as many goals as we wanted him to score.

"Obviously, he has to score more. He's the number nine of the team. The number nine is expected to score goals so whether he's not scoring for Manchester United or any other club, you will always get the spotlight.

"But Josh [Zirkzee] has to score more. I have to score more. Garna [Alejandro Garnacho] has to score more. Mason [Mount], Amad [Diallo].

"We need to try to find a way of creating more chances for the team to score."

Some critics have claimed Hojlund needs to start making more off-the-ball runs to help himself become more effective for the team.

However, Bruno has insisted it's still a team effort.

He explained: "We need to understand the characteristics of every player on the pitch.

"Obviously we need to read whether he's on the ball, what kind of movements we can do. We need to know if the player on the ball is capable of a pass behind or a risky pass or whatever.

"You don't make the same runs no matter which player is on the ball."

United boss Ruben Amorim has been vocal about needing to improve his squad, and Red Devils legend Eric Cantona recently suggested the Portuguese coach is "unhappy" with his players.

He said: "We have to wait. He did great things at (Sporting) Lisbon and came in during the middle of the season, so he didn't choose a player, I know he's unhappy about the players.

"So we have to wait until this summer. It will be more fair to judge him next season because he has to work with players he didn't choose."
