Google dismisses reports that Fitbit is being discontinued

Google has denied reports that Fitbit could be facing the axe.

It was suggested earlier this week that the tech giant could be retiring the fitness smartwatches after the announcement of the Pixel Watch 3 but the company has issued a statement downplaying the idea that Fitbit's time is up.

The Google statement reads: "We are very committed to Fitbit, and even more importantly to the customers that use and depend on those products and technology.

"It's also worth noting that many of the health and fitness features we launched in Pixel Watch 3 were because of Fitbit's innovation and groundbreaking fitness advancements.

"In addition, we just launched Fitbit Ace LTE, and you'll continue to see new products and innovation from Fitbit."

The Fitbit ACE LTE may lack the gloss of a Fitbit watch but has innovative additions such as letting kids unlock access to games if they move more throughout the day.

There is also the equivalent of virtual pets, called Eejies, that get more "happy and healthy" when the wearer of the Fitbit ACE LTE achieves their activity goals.

Should Google no longer produce Fitbit smartwatches, it would leave a gap in the market as there would only be fitness trackers such as the Inspire, Charge and Luxe.

Fitbit's most recent launches were the Charge 6 from last October and the Inspire 3 from September 2022 and there is currently no word as to when the next product will be released.
