Donald Trump uses AI images to falsely claim election endorsement from Taylor Swift

Donald Trump has posted a series of AI images to falsely suggest that Taylor Swift has endorsed him in the US presidential election.

The Republican nominee has put a number of fake images on his Truth Social site, including a mock poster of the music super star dressed in red, white and blue with the caption: "Taylor Swift Wants You To Vote For Donald Trump."

Trump wrote in response: "I accept!"

The images also include fans wearing "Swifties for Trump" T-shirts.

Although two of the pictures include a real woman who is a supporter of the former president, NBC News reports that at least 15 are representations of people created through AI.

The images had been posted on X by several pro-Trump accounts - one of which has posted multiple guides to using generative AI tools on its Substack blog.

Another account reposted by Trump said: "There is no Swifties for Trump movement - but there should be."

The 'Cardigan' hitmaker hasn't endorsed a 2024 election candidate publically but previously supported outgoing president Joe Biden in the 2020 vote.

She posted on X in criticism of Trump during the protests after the police murder of George Floyd earlier that year: "After stoking the fires of white supremacy and racism your entire presidency, you have the nerve to feign moral superiority before threatening violence?

"We will vote you out in November."

Consumer group Public Citizen suggested that Trump's post was "yet another example of AI's power to create misinformation".

It said: "The potential harms to our society that could result from such misinformation, including abuses of our elections, are wide-reaching and immensely damaging."
