Amazon closes checkout-free store just three years after opening

Amazon has closed one of its checkout-free stores just three years after opening.

The tech giant launched its first Amazon Fresh branch with its Just Walk Out technology - which allows users to fill up their bag and leave without going through a checkout - in 2021 but now it has announced that one of its locations, in Richmond, will be shutting its doors for good.

An Amazon spokeswoman told The Grocer: "Certain store locations work better than others, and after an assessment of our offering, we’ve decided to close our Amazon Fresh store in Richmond."

The company still has several stores based across London and has installed them complete with the Just Walk Out technology in various places such and hospitals and airports, and the spokeswoman assured regulars that that there are still plenty of options around.

The spokeswoman continued: "Customers in the area can continue to shop from a wide selection of grocery products at Amazon.co.uk with same-day delivery options, or from our other Amazon Fresh stores across London."
