California's glitzy city made the list in part thanks to its art scene - which includes Destination Crenshaw, a 1.3-mile-long open-air museum spread across one of the city's streets dedicated to Black history and culture.
Another US city which made the list was Boise in Idaho which is home to Jailadi festival - one of the world’s largest celebrations of Basque culture - and it returns in July 2025 after being put on hold due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
Thailand's capital Bangkok features alongside the lesser-known city of Antigua in Guatemala where visitors can hike around active volcano Volcan de Fuego.
Italian hotspots Rome and Florence were shunned from the list with National Geographic instead pointing tourists towards the Italian peninsula to visit cenobitic monasteries.
For natural beauty, the publication listed the Outer Hebrides in Scotland as well as Sweden’s Stockholm Archipelago of islands and islets.
Greenland was included on the list thanks to its new international airport in the capital city Nuuk while Senegal was feted for its food scene, Tunisia for its Roman ruins and Barbados nabbed a spot for its new Heritage District which is due to open in 2025.
Other must-visit destinations included in the list were Kanazawa in Japan, the Brazilian region of Cerrado, Northland in New Zealand and Senegal.
