London Heathrow sees spike in passenger numbers

London Heathrow witnessed another record-breaking month in January.

The UK travel hub enjoyed its busiest ever January, with 6.3 million passengers passing through the airport during the month.

The figure represents an increase of 5.4 percent on the same month last year, while the overall number of flights increased by 4.6 percent across January.

The figures were boosted by a sizeable increase in transatlantic traffic, with Heathrow seeing an eight percent year-on-year rise in the number of passengers flying between the UK and the US.

What's more, the data shows that traffic from the Middle East increased by 9.3 percent.

Heathrow appears to be in particularly rude health at the moment, with the airport setting a new annual passenger record (83.9 million passengers) in 2024.

The travel hub has also recently received backing from the UK government to build a third runway at the site, and Thomas Woldbye, the airport's CEO, already has ambitious plans for Heathrow's long-term future.

He said: "2025 has started how we mean to go on - serving record breaking passenger numbers and delivering trade and investment across the whole of the UK.

"To ensure we continue on this upwards trajectory, the government has signalled their support for an expanded Heathrow. We'll now work with ministers to progress the necessary policy changes required to advance our growth plans."

Thomas is also convinced that the new runway will help to deliver economic growth for the UK.

He said: "This privately-funded program will upgrade existing infrastructure while laying the groundwork for a third runway, boosting UK investment and economic growth, with tangible benefits felt this year."
