The airline announced in August 2024 that two routes — from Manchester and Birmingham to Salerno, Italy — would run this summer but has axed them just six months later due to a lack of bookings from holidaymakers.
Salerno is an Italian city southeast of Naples. Its proximity to many of the country’s popular sights, like the scenic Amalfi Coast and historic Pompeii, make it a popular tourist destination.
As a result of the two routes being cancelled, Jet2 announced it would increase its number of routes to Naples.
However, this fix has been controversial as Salerno is closer than Naples to desired Italian travel spots, such as Amalfi, Positano, and Sorrento.
A Jet2 spokesperson told The Sun newspaper that the airline had been reviewing the Salerno route programme with regard to demand for the service.
The spokesperson continued: "Where customers are affected, we will contact them to let them know their options which include travelling via Naples Airport, rebooking, or receiving a full refund."
Since the start of 2024, Jet2 has added more than 40 flight route from the UK but six have subsequently been cancelled.
Anton Radchenko, aviation expert and founder of AirAdvisor, commented on the development : “Jet2 has consistently been one of the most punctual airlines in the UK, so with these cancellations, passengers will have to explore other options such as easyJet Ryanair, which are not at par with Jet2’s on-time performance.
"Plus, Amalfi Coast, one of the most popular European beach destinations, is closer to Salerno than Naples. With a difference of nearly 60 kms, passengers will take an hour extra, while paying higher on-ground costs. However, on the positive side, Naples offers more flight options and is a larger hub, making it more appealing for travellers with flexible itineraries.”
