Major international airport to open in 'world's happiest country' Bhutan

The "world's happiest country" Bhutan is set to open an international airport.

The landlocked nation between India and China, which is known for having minimal tourists, will open a new airport complete with yoga rooms and sound bath zones.

Gelephu International Airport will have massive gardens and an open-air forest known as the Forest Spine to split the domestic and international terminals.

Designs show that the airport will be made out of a series of wooden diamond structures, replicating a mountain range.

The country's second international airport will have the capacity for 123 flights per day, with a maximum of 1.3 million passengers annually.

Most long-haul flights to Bhutan land at Paro International Airport in the country's capital Thimphu - but only a few flights can land per day as it is located close to a mountain range.

Gelephu is situated in southern Bhutan, near the border of India, which makes it more accessible.

Architecture firm The Bjarke Ingels Group explained that the airport has been designed to embrace Bhutan's ethos of "gross national happiness" - which uses citizens' well-being as a measure for quality of life.

Bjarke Ingels, founder and creative director, said: "An airport is the first and last impression you get of a place you visit.

"For the Gelephu International Airport, we have tried to embody the nature and culture of the country and the Mindfulness City.

"The forests that cover the highlands are allowed to flow from the arrival plaza through the airport to the tarmac."

Bhutan is regarded as the "world's happiest country" because of its Gross National Happiness Index.

The index takes into account factors such as psychological well-being, health, education, governance, ecology, use of time, culture, living standards and community vitality to measure the collective happiness of the population.

The cost of the airport has not yet been confirmed but could be as much as £178 million when it opens in 2029.
